Quest Start
So I’m not quite sure how you kick one of these bad boys off really. Hello? Welcome? Or perhaps in the immortal words of Mr Burns – Ahoy hoy! Yeah that seems right.
Turns out having the freedom to write down your own thoughts makes you realise that your thoughts are weird, or they get distracted, or sometimes they’re just non-existent. So maybe let’s start with the thought that led to the creation of this website.
Have you ever just sat down and thought to yourself, “what the hell am I doing in life“, and “what am I heading toward?” Perhaps that’s less of a “have you” and more of a “when did you last” sort of question, because in all honesty we all have, multiple times.
It’s a feeling that likes to creep up on us, slap us in the face, and then hide until the next time we catch ourselves looking in the mirror at a side profile. Can I still blame Christmas in March?
Perhaps at that point we’ve then dabbled in a new venture, signed up to a new thing, or pencilled in some plans to better ourselves in whichever way possible. Or perhaps we just resign to our fate and end up looking for something else to distract us from the daily grind.
This is inevitably why we like exploring expansive virtual worlds in gaming, immersing ourselves in countless stories with the written word, or simply tuning out with a good old fashion romcom. Whatever you choose, there is no shame in getting completely lost within it.The difficulty then comes in getting back out of it. Stupid Sunday evening blues.
My wife and I are very lucky to have found each other, as we both share and compliment the individual ways in which we enjoy getting lost in our hobbies.
Whether it be playing couch co-op on yet another steam game, or her reading a book whilst I get more paint on myself than on my warhammer mini, being able to have that freedom to do the things you enjoy without judgement or reservation is amazing.
So after collectively ticking off our nerd hobby bingo card, we sat down one day and thought, “you know what, instead of chatting so much shit about what we like to each other, maybe we should write about it.”
And so began our new venture of building a website and blogging.
Enter, Youtube
Much like with every DIY project in the house, it was time to once again ask youtube about how to do something when we have absolutely no idea what we’re doing. Up to now, the pseudo dads on there have taught us how to be plumbers, painters, electricians, and carpenters.
I have also recently thrown myself into the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40k, and the miniature community has been a treasure trove of information. She has been learning how to knit in order to be sustainable and avoid fast fashion. In fact she’s taken it so seriously that she has invented something called “slow fashion”. That jumper is going to be a corker though.. eventually.
Getting to understand the basics of website building and customising has been both challenging and really fun! Hours passed by on my first night getting things off the ground, and before I knew it, it was 2am and my work alarm was set to go off in a few hours.
Not that the time was an issue, rookie numbers really when compared to the late night group party sessions – I’m looking at you Sea of Thieves and Valheim.
There are a lot of videos out there to not only understand how to create and design everything, but to also understand what it all means.
The trouble is, the youtube algorithm is a massive distraction, so in between these informative videos would also be breaks to watch the 6 Nations highlights, a warhammer battle report, a funny short, or another ridiculous thing that Trump has done. Focussing is tough man..
For both of us, all of this is new territory, it’s one hell of a learning curve, but it’s fascinating and exciting. There will forever be the tweaking and changing, the fine tuning and the odd complete overhaul, but it’s great to simply be able to create something together.
The End of the Beginning
When all is said and done, will this just be another venture that loses steam? Who knows really, but if there’s no harm giving it a go, why not eh?
To learn new skills and have the ability to create and design something you can call your own. But ultimately it’s the chance to write down your thoughts about the things you love, and maybe someone else would find that interesting and want to share along the journey.
A journey where we will explore and discuss what a pair of home bodies like to geek out about. If we find new games or new stories to talk about, hopefully there will be other couples or individuals that also think – Will that’s pretty facking cool, let’s try it too.
Even writing this, my first blog post, has been good craic. Maybe this has been the subconscious creation inspired from watching all the Bridget Jones films, is this our diary now? In any case you should watch that last film of hers, it’ll sucker punch you right in the feels.
Where were we again? Of right, and they all lived happily ever after… Or something like that.
